• The Community Chest was founded by Dr Ee Peng Liang in 1983 under the then Singapore Council of Social Service.
• The Community Chest was established to raise funds, encourage community participation, and provide services to those in need. The Community Chest has established strong partnerships with individuals, and across the private and public sectors to build an impactful social service ecosystem.
• Dr Ee Peng Liang was a businessman and a passionate philanthropist, who was known as the Father of Charity. He had held key appointments in over 50 public organisations.
• In 1992, the Singapore Council of Social Service (SCSS) restructured to form the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). Dr Ee handed over his position as Chairman of the Community Chest to Dr Richard Eu and his position of President of NCCS to Dr Robert CK Loh.
• The Community Chest mainly raises funds through the Social Help and Assistance Raised by Employees (SHARE) programme. In the programme, employers can deduct contributions from the pay of participating employees and donate it to the Community Chest. Other fundraising methods include corporation donations and special events.
• Currently, the Community Chest is the main fundraising agency in Singapore’s social service sector.

The Community Chest has developed from a single-function platform for raising funds into a comprehensive assistance platform. The agency allows institutions and individuals to contribute their time, skills and resources through partnerships with social service organisations in addition to personal donations.
