DEFINITION

Noun

A kind of white fluid used to cover up errors in writing so they can be corrected.

(Ministry of Communications and Information)属下的推广华语秘书处(Promote Mandarin Council Secretariat)于 1984 年定下的名称。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “涂改剂” is a paraphrase of the English term “correction fluid”.
  • The correction fluid was invented by an American single mother named Bette Nesmith Graham in 1954. Originally wanting to be an artist, she worked as a secretary at the Texas Bank and Trust, where she frequently made typing errors when typing on a new typewriter model. She later remembered the saying “an artist never corrects by erasing but always paints over the error”, and a a stroke of inspiration drove her to concoct a correction fluid that could be used on paper to correct her typing errors.
  • At the time this correction fluid was called Mistake Out, and it was later renamed Liquid Paper.
  • The Chinese term “涂改剂” was coined and confirmed in 1984 by the Promote Mandarin Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Communications and Information.
