The largest and most important festival celebrated by Singaporean Indians, also known as the Festival of Lights. A public holiday in Singapore. Also known in Mandarin as "明灯节" or "万灯节“.

  • 屠妖节在新加坡称为 “Deepavali”。这一节日是在泰米尔历的10月中旬至11月中旬之间，当天，家家户户在门口点燃油灯或蜡烛，庆祝光明战胜黑暗、善良战胜邪恶。在其起源地的印度，有几种不同的说法，在南印度人们欢庆光明的守护神克里斯南（Krishna）为他们除掉恶魔之王那拉卡（Naraka）；在北印度则是出自于印度史诗《罗摩衍那》故事，作为庆祝英雄罗摩神杀死魔王罗波那（Ravana）的节日。新加坡印度人在这一天穿上新衣到庙宇祈福，也到亲戚家拜访和互赠糕饼糖果。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Deepavali generally falls between mid-tenth month and mid-eleventh month in the Tamil calendar. On that day, families would light oil lamps or candles at their doorsteps to celebrate the victory of light over the forces of darkness, and the victory of good over evil. At its place of origin in India, there are several different beliefs. The southern Indians celebrate the festival as the day when the Guardian God of Light Krishna overcame and destroyed the evil demon King Naraka. In northern India, the origin of the festival came from the legends in the Hindu epic Ramayana, where the hero Rama killed the demon king Ravana. On this day, Singaporean Indians will don new clothes and offer prayers at a temple. They would also visit their relatives to exchange gifts of cakes and sweets.
