释义

名词

罗敏申路(Robinson Road)及芬礼逊埔(Finlayson Green)交界处的俗称。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name for the junction of Robinson Road and Finlayson Green.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “老巴刹口” originated from the Hokkien or Teochew dialect term lau pa sat kao.
  • Lau Pa Sat, built in 1825, was originally known as Telok Ayer Market. The Mandarin term “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay term pasar and refers to a marketplace.
  • Lau Pa Sat is the first market in Singapore and was built on the order of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. Its location at Telok Ayer Basin (near the current Lau Pa Sat) was selected by the first British Resident and Commandant in Singapore, William Farquhar. At that time, it was just a simple timber building.
  • At that time, as the entrance of Lau Pa Sat was located at the intersection of Robinson Road and Finlayson Green, the location was also colloquially known as “老巴刹口” , meaning entrance of Lau Pa Sat.
  • Finlayson Green was named after John Finlayson, who was the chairman of Tanjong Pagar Dock Company from 1883 to 1895.
  • Robinson Road was named after Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson, who served as Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1877 to 1879.
