An elevated section of a road that spans over the ground or water bodies.

ETYMOLOGY
  • As early as 1970, the term was used by Sin Chew Jit Poh.
  • With the introduction of expressways, overpasses were constructed to allow a smoother flow of traffic, by building two roads at different heights as opposed to intersecting them at ground level.
  • Since 1990, all overpasses were assigned names, which are displayed on nearby signboards.

SAMPLE SENTENCE
Our roads have height restrictions because there are flyovers and pedestrian bridges crossing certain sections. If heavy vehicles fail to adhere to the height limits and collide with these structures, the repercussions could range from minor damage to both the vehicle and the bridge to more severe consequences such as collapse of the bridge, harming innocent pedestrians and other drivers or riders.
