ETYMOLOGY
  • Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) was founded in 1974.
  • As the HCJC campus appeared to be painted golden yellow during sunset, it was given the beautiful name of “黄城” (meaning “yellow city”).
  • To enable its students to be admitted to top universities in Singapore and abroad, HCJC offers bilingual and bicultural programmes.
  • Initially, as the construction of the campus was uncompleted, HCJC shared a campus with National Junior College. A few months later, HCJC moved to the location of the then University of Singapore at Bukit Timah Road. This campus is now used by the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Law. Today, HCJC’s campus remains in the Bukit Timah Road area.
  • On 1 January 2005, HCJC merged with The Chinese High School to become Hwa Chong Institution. After the merger, a six-year Integrated Programme was established, with the school divided into the College section and the High School section.
