DEFINITION

Noun

A written announcement issued by the government to the public.

这份宪报的前身可以追溯到 1828 年发行的《槟岛、新加坡和马六甲的政府宪报》(Government Gazette of Prince of Wales Island, Singapore and Malacca)。
之后随着政局的变化,该宪报也曾改名为《新加坡殖民地政府宪报》(Colony of Singapore Government Gazette)和《新加坡州宪报》(State of Singapore Gazette)。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Abbreviation of the term “government gazette”.
  • The “Straits Government Gazette” may be Singapore's earliest government gazette, with its first edition issued in 1858. The gazette's name originates from Singapore's status as part of the Straits Settlements.
  • The contents of the “Straits Government Gazette” are similar to today's gazette, which includes declarations issued by leaders, announcements of new government appointments, and the promulgation of regulations. The predecessor of the “Straits Government Gazette” can be traced back to the “Government Gazette of Prince of Wales Island, Singapore and Malacca” issued in 1828. The gazette was published once a week until 1830.
  • The “Straits Government Gazette” was published until 1867, after which it was renamed the “Straits Settlements Government Gazette”. The “Straits Settlements Government Gazette” ceased publication during the Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), but resumed publication in November 1945 as the “British Military Administration, Malaya Gazette, Singapore Division”. Following changes in Singapore's political situation, the gazette was renamed the “Colony of Singapore Government Gazette” and subsequently the “State of Singapore Gazette”.
  • When Singapore achieved independence in 1965, the gazette was renamed the “Republic of Singapore Government Gazette”.
  • In 1998, the government gazette launched the Electronic Gazette (e-Gazette), which is published daily. Its contents mainly include legal and political documents, such as information on government decrees and bills. The public can access contents published on the website for five days, after which a paid subscription is required to access the online archive. Starting from the end of January 2020, all publications on the e-Gazette will be made available to the public for free.
  • The print copy of the gazette is published every Friday by Toppan Leefung Pte. Ltd. The company was established in 1867 as the former Singapore Government Printing Office, and is the only printing organisation authorised by the government to publish the gazette.
