• In 1984, the Ministry of Education (MOE) rolled out the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) as it believes that students who are intellectually gifted require a learning environment which can challenge their abilities. As Singapore lacks natural resources and relies heavily on human capital, the education of gifted students is seen as an important aspect in cultivating successful talent.
• The GEP encourages schools to design and implement courses that widen students’ horizons, or to collaborate with other schools in developing students’ talents in areas such as languages, arts, mathematics and science.
• The GEP is open to all Primary Four students. However, students must first participate in an identification exercise to determine if they are able to join the programme in Primary Three.
• There are two stages in the exercise, one in August and another in October. All Primary Three students studying in government schools and Special Assistance Plan (SAP) schools can participate in the first stage of the selection in which English and Mathematics are tested. In the second stage, students are tested in English, Mathematics and General Ability.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) conducts a Gifted Education Programme (GEP) identification exercise for Primary Three students every year. In each batch, only 1% of students are selected into the GEP. Currently, the GEP is offered in nine primary schools including Rosyth School, Tao Nan School, Nanyang Primary School, Raffles Girls’ Primary School and Henry Park Primary School.
