DEFINITION

Noun

An alternative name for Golden Mile Complex that means “Little Thailand”. The complex is located between Nicoll Highway and Beach Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Golden Mile Complex was originally known as Woh Hup Complex. Completed in 1973, the 16-storey mixed-use complex comprises 411 commercial units, 70 residential units, and 500 parking lots.
  • By 1977, a travel agency specialising in trips to Thailand had begun operating in Golden Mile Complex. This indirectly resulted in the building becoming a gathering place for Thais working in Singapore.
  • Many retail shops in Golden Mile Complex sold Thai food, clothing and merchandise. There were also Thai restaurants, bars, hair salons, and supermarkets in the building, resulting in an environment highly reminiscent of Thailand.
  • Golden Mile Complex was officially gazetted by the Urban Redevelopment Authority as a conserved building in October 2021. The following year, it was acquired by a consortium of three organisations for S$700 million. All tenants moved out by May 2023, marking the end of an era at Golden Mile Complex.
