Noun

An area located in the Katong area in eastern Singapore, bordering Geylang, East Coast and Marine Parade.

由来
  • 1820 年代，如切和加东一带原是茂密的椰子种植园。
  • 1890 年代，福建南来新加坡的商人周如切在加东买下了大片土地，用部分地皮建造房屋，成为了著名的房地产商，被称为 “加东之王”。
  • 住在如切一带的居民多数是土生华人（Peranakan Chinese）或欧亚裔（Eurasian），因此这一带的房屋建筑具有许多不同文化的特色。
  • 1900 年代，周如切出让部分地段给殖民地政府，作为道路开发的用途。1917 年，道路建好后，殖民地政府将原称 “同盟庄园路” （Confederate Estate Road）的公路改名为 “如切路”（Joo Chiat Road）作为纪念。
  • 为了保留各种族的文化遗产，国家文物局于 2011 年 2 月份将如切列为新加坡首个 “文化城镇” （Heritage Town）。
ETYMOLOGY
  • In the 1820s, the Joo Chiat and Katong areas used to be covered with dense coconut plantations.
  • In the 1890s, businessman Chew Joo Chiat from Fujian came south to Singapore and bought a large expanse of land in Katong. He built houses with part of the land and became a famous real estate developer, and was known as “加东之王” (“King of Katong”).
  • Most of the residents living in the Joo Chiat area were Peranakan Chinese or Eurasian, so the houses in this area possess many different cultural characteristics.
  • In the 1900s, Chew Joo Chiat transferred part of the land to the colonial government for road development. In 1917, after the road was completed, the colonial government renamed it from its original name, Confederate Estate Road, to Joo Chiat Road in commemoration.
  • To preserve the cultural heritage of the various ethnic groups, the National Heritage Board listed Joo Chiat as Singapore’s first Heritage Town in February 2011.
