释义

名词

居民邻里之间守望相助、互相关怀的精神。

DEFINITION

Noun

A spirit of watching out for and helping each other among residents of a neighbourhood.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “甘榜” is the transliteration of the Malay word kampung, which is used to refer to villages.
  • Before urbanisation and the implementation of public housing policies in Singapore, most residents in Singapore lived in villages. Living in villages meant that neighbours interacted frequently, looking out and caring for one another, demonstrating a sense of unity.
  • Although most villages in Singapore have vanished by the late 1980s, the kampung spirit can still be passed on to modern residential modes. Thus, to promote unity within the neighbourhood, government officials, grassroot committees, and volunteer groups have constantly encouraged and advocated for the kampung spirit to be cultivated among neighbours.
  • In 2017, Kampung Admiralty was completed. The development was jointly launched by organisations such as the Housing and Development Board and Ministry of Health. It is  a new residential concept that aims at recreating a “modern kampung”, integrating accomodation, eateries, medical facilities and other amenities in the development. This provides convenience for the elderly and promotes mutual care among residents.
