DEFINITION

Noun

The oldest hawker centre in Singapore, located in the Central Business District.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Built in 1825, Lau Pa Sat was originally known as Telok Ayer Market. The Mandarin term 巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay term pasar, which refers to a market.
  • Lau Pa Sat is Singapore’s first market and was built in 1822 by the order of Sir Stamford Raffles. Its location at Telok Ayer Basin was chosen by William Farquhar, Singapores first Resident and Commandant. At that time, Lau Pa Sat was only a simple timber building.
  • In 1834, Telok Ayer Market was rebuilt at the same location as a brick building, which was designed by renowned architect George Coleman. The overall design was known for its Victorian-style octagonal roof.
  • In 1845, the British colonial government built Singapore’s second market, known as Ellenborough Market, along the river near Coleman Bridge. The people referred it colloquially as “新巴刹(meaning “new market”) and Telok Ayer Market as “老巴刹” (meaning “old market”, colloquially known as lau pa sat).
  • Lau Pa Sat was closed again in 1879 due to land reclamation projects and was relocated to the new reclaimed land at Collyer Quay in 1894, where it remains till today. The engineer responsible for rebuilding Lau Pa Sat, James MacRitchie, retained the octagonal roof design.
  • Lau Pa Sat was originally a wet market and hawker centre. However, since the 1970s, it stopped selling vegetable, fruit, and meat items, becoming a hawker centre that only sells cooked food.
  • Lau Pa Sat was listed as a national monument in 1973.
  • In 1985, Lau Pa Sat was demolished due to the construction of MRT tunnels. It was rebuilt at the original site in 1989 and reopened in 1992.
