释义

名词

供乘客临时雇用的大型豪华汽车,原先为奥斯汀 (Austin) 生产的车型,和英国首都伦敦的德士很像,因此得名。

DEFINITION

Noun

Large, premium taxis that were originally Austin models and resemble the taxis found in London.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “伦敦德士” is a paraphrase of the English term “London cab”.
  • In November 1949, the first batch of London cabs (a 1949 Austinmodel) began operating in Singapore. At that time, taxi drivers owned their taxis. Thus, given the high price tag of London cabs, around $7,000 each, they were a relatively rare sight on the streets.
  • Initially, the fare for London cabs was the same as that for ordinary taxis, which was 30 cents a mile.
  • Today, London cabs are a preferred mode of transport for people using wheelchairs, as there is enough room to accommodate the wheelchair onboard as well as equipment to assist passengers in boarding and alighting.
  • In 2012, the Government provided SMRT with a S$3.1 million grant which was subsequently used to purchase new London cabs.
  • As of August 2013, there were 30 London cabs in Singapore.
例句
《康福》在本期月刊向工友们介绍以服务著称的伦敦德士时指出了:伦敦的德士司机也是街边专家,他们对市内错综复杂的街道了若指掌。(《联合晚报》,15/5/1986)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
This month’s Comfort magazine introduces the London cab, known for its service excellence, to fellow workers, highlighting the expertise of its drivers on the streets and their understanding of the complex network of streets in the city. (Lianhe Wanbao, 15/5/1986)
