释义

名词

驳船北码头(North Boat Quay)的俗称。也称王家山脚后。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of North Boat Quay. Also known as “王家山脚后”.

由来
  • 福建话 hai guan zeng 的意译。
  • 有说法认为,“海关前” 一名中的海关指海关大厦(Customs House)。建于 1960 年代的海关大厦今称为富丽敦海韵楼(英文名称保留),在 1969 年为新加坡海关警察(Singapore Customs )的港口分署,负责监视出入口活动及保护新加坡海港。
  • 根据一幅绘于 1836 年的新加坡城镇与环境地图(Map of The Town and Environs of Singapore),海关警察分署原设于驳船北码头的海港入口处。因此,位于海关前方的驳船北码头也俗称为 “海关前”。
  • 驳船北码头位于驳船码头(Boat Quay)的北面,即新加坡河北岸,同属于早期南来先辈的落脚处。
  • 由于驳船北码头位于皇家山(也称王家山)山脚的后方,因此该地段也俗称为王家山脚后。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “海关前” is a paraphrase of the Hokkien term hai guan zeng.
  • It is believed that the term “海关” in “海关前” referred to “海关大厦”, or Customs House. Built in the 1960s, the building is now “富丽敦海韵楼” in Mandarin, with its English name unchanged. In 1969, it was home to the harbour division of the Singapore Customs Police, which was responsible for monitoring import and export activities and protecting Singapore’s harbour.
  • According to the 1836 Map of The Town and Environs of Singapore, the customs branch office was originally located at the harbour entrance of North Boat Quay. Therefore, North Boat Quay, located in front of Customs House, became also colloquially known as 海关.
  • North Boat Quay is located at the north of Boat Quay, which is the north bank of Singapore River and also where the early Chinese immigrants settled.
  • As North Boat Quay is located behind the foot of Fort Canning Hill (also known as “王家山”), the area also became colloquially known as “王家山脚后” (meaning “behind the foot of Fort Canning Hill”).
