North Bridge Road or South Bridge Road
释义
名词
- 桥南路(South Bridge Road)的俗称。也称“大坡大马路”、“金铺街”。
- 桥北路(North Bridge Road)的俗称。也称“小坡大马路”、“水仙门一街”、“水仙门头街”
DEFINITION
Noun
- The colloquial name of South Bridge Road. Also known in Mandarin as “大坡大马路”, “金铺街”.
- The colloquial name of North Bridge Road. Also known in Mandarin as “小坡大马路”, “水仙门一街”or“水仙门头街”.
由来
- “桥南路”和“桥北路”当中的“桥”都指横跨新加坡河的埃尔金桥(Elgin Bridge)。该桥也是划分大坡(即桥南路一带)和小坡(即桥北路一带)的主要地标。
- 由于桥南路和桥北路在当时是连接大坡和小坡的主干道路,因此这两条马路的俗称分别为“大坡大马路”和“小坡大马路”。
ETYMOLOGY
- The word “桥” (“bridge”) in “桥南路” (South Bridge Road) and “桥北路” (North Bridge Road) refers to Elgin Bridge across the Singapore River. The bridge is also the main landmark that separates “大坡” (vicinity of South Bridge Road) and “小坡” (vicinity of North Bridge Road).
- As South Bridge Road and North Bridge Road were the main roads connecting “大坡” and “小坡” in the past, these two roads became colloquially known as “大坡大马路” (main road in the South Bridge Road area) and “小坡大马路” (main road in the North Bridge Road area), respectively.
