释义

名词

一种外表和果肉都和红毛丹相似的水果。也称“山荔枝”、“黑毛丹”、“野红毛丹”。

DEFINITION

Noun

A fruit whose skin and flesh resemble the rambutan’s. Also known in Mandarin as “山荔枝”, “黑毛丹” or “野红毛丹”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “葡萄桑” is the transliteration of the Malay name for the fruit, pulasan.
  • The scientific name of the pulasan is Nephelium ramboutan-ake. The fruit is native to the Malay Peninsula.
  • In Malay, pulas means “to twist” and corresponds to the action of twisting the pulasan with both hands to peel off its skin.
  • The pulasan is oval in shape and about 4 to 6.5 centimetres long. Its skin varies from red to dark purple, while its flesh is white to yellow.
  • As the pulasan resembles lychees and rambutans, it is also known in Mandarin as “山荔枝” (literally, “mountain lychee”), “黑毛丹” (literally, “black rambutan”) and “野红毛丹” (literally, “wild rambutan”).
  • One obvious difference between the pulasan and rambutan is that the skin of the rambutan is hairy while that of the pulasan is covered with soft thorns, which are much thicker than the rambutan hairs.
  •  The pulasan is slightly sweeter than the rambutan and can be used to make jam. The seed can be boiled or roasted to make a cocoa-like beverage. It can also be eaten directly, with a taste similar to almonds.
  • The pulasan is a seasonal fruit that is harvested from August to September.
