释义

名词

一种外表和果肉都类似于红毛丹的水果。也称“山荔枝”、“黑毛丹”、“野红毛丹”。

DEFINITION

Noun

A fruit that resembles the rambutan’s appearance and flesh. Also known in Mandarin as “山荔枝”,“黑毛丹”or“野红毛丹”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “葡萄桑” is the transliteration of the Malay word pulasan.
  • The scientific name of the pulasan is Nephelium ramboutan-ake. The fruit originates from Malaysia.
  • In Malay, pulas means “to twist” and corresponds to the action of twisting the pulasan with both hands to peel off its skin.
  • As the pulasan resembles lychees and rambutans, it is also known as 山荔枝” (mountain lychee), 黑毛丹” (black rambutan) , and 野红毛丹” (wild rambutan).
  • The pulasan is oval in shape and about four to six-and-a-half centimetres long. Its skin colour is somewhere between red and dark purple, while its flesh colour ranges from white to yellow.
  • The more obvious difference between the pulasan and rambutan is that the skin of the latter is hairy while that of the pulasan is covered with soft thorns, which are much thicker than the rambutan hairs.
  • The pulasan is slightly sweeter than the rambutan and can be used to make jam. The pulasan seed can also be boiled or roasted to make a cocoa-like beverage. It can also be eaten directly, with a taste similar to almonds.
  • The pulasan is a seasonal fruit that is harvested from August to September annually.
