  • 葡萄桑的学名是Nephelium ramboutan-ake，原产地在马来西亚。
  • 在马来语中，pulas 是扭曲的意思，象征人们剥开葡萄桑的果皮时，用双手扭转果皮的动作。
  • 由于葡萄桑长得很像荔枝和红毛丹，它们也称为“山荔枝”、“黑毛丹”和“野红毛丹”。
  • 葡萄桑为椭圆形，大约四到六个半厘米长，果皮颜色在赤红色和深紫色之间，果肉则在白色和黄色之间。
  • 葡萄桑与红毛丹较明显的不同之处，在于后者的果皮是毛茸茸的，但前者的果皮上长满软刺，比红毛丹的毛粗许多。
  • 葡萄桑的果肉比红毛丹稍微甜一些，可以用于制作果酱。人们也可以把葡萄桑的种子煮熟或烤来制作类似可可的饮料，也可以直接吃，味道类似于杏仁。

ETYMOLOGY
  • The term “葡萄桑” is the transliteration of the Malay word pulasan.
  • The scientific name of the pulasan is Nephelium ramboutan-ake. The fruit originates from Malaysia.
  • In Malay, pulas means “to twist” and corresponds to the action of twisting the pulasan with both hands to peel off its skin.
  • As the pulasan resembles lychees and rambutans, it is also known as “山荔枝” (mountain lychee), “黑毛丹” (black rambutan) , and “野红毛丹” (wild rambutan).
  • The pulasan is oval in shape and about four to six-and-a-half centimetres long. Its skin colour is somewhere between red and dark purple, while its flesh colour ranges from white to yellow.
  • The more obvious difference between the pulasan and rambutan is that the skin of the latter is hairy while that of the pulasan is covered with soft thorns, which are much thicker than the rambutan hairs.
  • The pulasan is slightly sweeter than the rambutan and can be used to make jam. The pulasan seed can also be boiled or roasted to make a cocoa-like beverage. It can also be eaten directly, with a taste similar to almonds.
  • The pulasan is a seasonal fruit that is harvested from August to September annually.
