The Speak Mandarin Campaign “My Story” Public Speaking
Competition was first launched in 2017, as an oratorical competition
targeted at local students and teenagers between 13 and 18 years of age,
with the objective to provide them with a platform to share their own
inspiring stories. The competition also aims to hone the oratorical and
presentation skills of these participants, as well as to build their
confidence in expressing themselves in Mandarin.
This year, the competition also added a new Open Category to provide young
adults, between 19 and 35 years of age, with the opportunity to share their
stories by way of online video entries.
A total of 12 shortlisted finalists (Student Category) vied for the top
three Winner positions on stage at the Grand Finals, held on 31 July 2018 at Our Tampines Hub, Festive Arts Theatre.
Auditions
Auditions took place on Saturday, 7 July 2018. Participants shared their
own stories based on the theme "My Story".
Grand Finals
The Grand Finals was held on Sunday 29 July 2018, and comprised of 2
parts.
Part 1
12 finalists compete to be shortlisted. They would each present a 90
second speech based on the topic “My Story”.
Part 2
6 shortlisted finalists would each present a 90 second speech based on the
topic “My Favourite”. Thereafter, there was an improvisation
segment where they were provided a topic on the spot. They were each given 60
seconds for the impromptu speech.
The audience had a chance to vote for their favourite contestant.
