释义

名词

新加坡中部地区,位于纽顿(Newton)、乌节(Orchard)及新加坡河(Singapore River)的西边,武吉知马(Bukit Timah)的东边,红山(Bukit Merah)的北边。

DEFINITION

Noun

An area in central Singapore, located west of Newton, Orchard and the Singapore River, east of Bukit Timah, and north of Bukit Merah.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Tanglin is an area of hilly terrain. When the early Teochews who came to Singapore developed the area, they called it “大东陵” (tua tang leng), literally, “high hill in the east”.
  • In 1854, William Napier, the first law agent in Singapore, made his home in the area. His residence was called “Tang Leng” – which was derived from the Teochew dialect name.
  • Today, there are many upscale residences, hotels and foreign embassies in Tanglin. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is also located here; its main entrance, built in 1859, is known as Tanglin Gate.
例句
东陵区与乌节购物地带有一段距离,是喧嚣闹市中难得的幽静住宅区,因此该区私宅向来抢手。(《联合早报》,30/6/2018)
SAMPLE SENTENCE
The Tanglin district is located a distance away from the bustling Orchard shopping belt, making it a rare tranquil residential area in the midst of the busy city. As a result, private homes in this area have always been in high demand. (Lianhe Zaobao, 30/6/2018)
