ETYMOLOGY
  • There were many hills in the Tanglin area in the 17th century, where tigers were often seen. Later, the Teochews, who came south to Singapore, developed this area and called it 大东陵” (twa tang leng), which means “the highest hill in the east”.
  • In 1854, William Napier, the first law agent in Singapore, settled down in Tanglin. His residence was called “Tang Leng”, which is the transliteration of the Teochew dialect term “东陵”.
  • There are many upscale residences, hotels and foreign embassies in the Tanglin area. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is also in this area. Its main entrance, which was built in 1859, is called the Tanglin Gate.
