• The Mandarin term “排屋” is a paraphrase of the English term “terrace house”.
• Terrace houses are landed property built in a row of at least three units. The houses share common boundary walls and are built according to the regulations of the Urban Redevelopment Authority.
• Terrace houses can be single-storey or multi-storey. They are mostly built by property developers or private individuals.
• Most terrace houses in Singapore and Malaysia typically house a single family, and have no common facilities.
• Singapore also has Government-built terrace houses. These came into existence in the 1950s. The double-storey terrace houses were constructed by the Singapore Improvement Trust, and subsequently managed by the Housing & Development Board from the 1960s. The upper floor consists of bedrooms, while the lower floor comprises a living room, kitchen and bathroom. Some of these terrace houses are located along Stirling Road in Singapore’s first satellite estate, Queenstown.

Even though property viewings could not be conducted due to the circuit breaker measures, a local buyer decided to purchase a S$2.2 million terrace house in Opera Estate in the Changi area five days after looking at photos of the property. (Shin Min Daily News, 22/5/2020)

• In recent years, other types of terrace houses have been built:
  1. Townhouses: Terrace houses that provide jointly managed services such as security and maintenance. Some also have common facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, and parking lots.
  2. Cluster houses: Private residences that are strata-titled, and built on the same plot of land. They are equipped with common facilities such as swimming pools and clubhouses, and provide security services.
