ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “恫言” is a paraphrase of the English term “threaten”.
  • “恫” refers to fear or to induce a sense of fear. Put together, the term “恫吓” means to intimidate others with threats of disaster or catastrophes.
  • In Singapore and Malaysia, “恫言” is a combination of the terms “恫吓” (threaten with fear) and “扬言” (to speak threatening words).
