Noun , Verb
Refers to caning as a form of punishment. Also refers to judicial caning, which is a form of corporal punishment under Singapore's Penal Code.
The official responsible for carrying out the punishment uses a rattan cane not exceeding 1.27 cm in diameter to cane the offender’s bare buttocks. Underage males may be sentenced to caning only by the Supreme Court.
A medical officer has to be present during the caning to certify that the offender is in a fit state of health to be caned. Caning must be stopped mid-execution if the medical officer certifies that the offender is not in a fit state of health to undergo the rest of the sentence.
Caning is only carried out on male offenders who are medically fit to undergo the punishment. Female offenders and male offenders above 50 years old are exempted from judicial caning.
Adults may be sentenced to a maximum of 24 strokes, while minors may be sentenced a maximum of 10 strokes.
