释义

名词

克罗士街上段(Upper Cross Street)的俗称。位于牛车水的边界,衔接合乐路(Havelock Road)与桥南路(South Bridge Road)。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name for Upper Cross Street, located at the boundary of Chinatown, connecting Havelock Road and South Bridge Road.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The name of “海山街” originated from the secret society “海山公司” (Hai San Society) that was located in this area in the early days.
  • The Mandarin term “克罗士” in “克罗士街上段” is a transliteration of the English term “cross”. Cross Street is also a one-way road from Raffles Quay to South Bridge Road.
  • At the beginning of the 20th century, as this area used to be home to Indian businessmen who sold meat and spices, it was also called “吉宁街”, which is the transliteration of “Kling Street”. However, as the term Kling is a derogatory term used to refer to Indians, its use was later discontinued.
  • In 1927, the Great Southern Hotel commenced operations at Upper Cross Street. This is the first Chinese hotel in Singapore with an elevator, and it was also the tallest building in Chinatown then.
