• Waterloo Street is home to many famous landmarks, including the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, the Sri Krishnan Temple and the Maghain Aboth Synagogue.
• Waterloo Street was originally known as Church Street, but its Chinese name is unverifiable. Church Street can be transliterated as “丘奇街”, or paraphrased as “教堂街” in Mandarin. As it is the fourth road that spanned the main throughfare in the North Bridge Road area, it was commonly known as “四马路” (Fourth Road) or “小坡四马路” (Fourth Road of the North Bridge Road area).
• In 1858, the Municipal Council renamed the road “Waterloo Street” due to the following reasons:
1. To commemorate the Duke of Wellington's victory over Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo.
2. To avoid confusion as there was another Church Street located near Raffles Place.
• In 1998, the Urban Redevelopment Authority designated the road in front of the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple and a part of Waterloo Street near Rochor Road as a pedestrian walkway.

Although Waterloo Street, commonly known as “四马路”, is famous for being home to the most visited Guanyin temple in Singapore, it also reflects the different races and religions coexisting in harmony in Singapore. (Lianhe Zaobao, 28/02/2018)
