ETYMOLOGY

The Mandarin term “板桥医院” is a paraphrase of the English name “Woodbridge Hospital”.
“板桥” refers to a former wooden bridge across the Seletar River near the hospital’s former site in Yio Chu Kang.
The origins of Woodbridge Hospital can be traced back to the Insane Hospital, which was established in 1841. It was located at the junction of Bras Basah Road and Bencoolen Street and had 30 beds.
To avoid using the word “insane”, the hospital was renamed the Mental Hospital in 1928. During the Second World War, the hospital was also used as a Japanese military and civilian hospital.
In 1951, the hospital was renamed Woodbridge Hospital. It later moved to Buangkok Green.
To reflect the hospital’s emphasis on research, training, and public education, it was officially renamed the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in 1993. Today, IMH remains the only acute psychiatric medical institute in Singapore.
