DEFINITION

Noun

A park and tourist attraction in Singapore specialising in the care and breeding of birds.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Jurong Bird Park opened in 1971 and was known as the largest bird park in Asia. Located in Jurong, the park housed a total of 3,500 birds and close to 400 species, some of which were critically endangered. It was the first park to have a bird hospital in the Asia Pacific region.
  • The genesis of Jurong Bird Park can be attributed to former Minister of Finance Dr Goh Keng Swee. In 1967, Dr Goh visited the Rio Aviary in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and came up with the idea of establishing a bird park in Singapore, as a place for Singaporeans to relax and enjoy nature in the rapidly urbanising city-state.
  • In 2023, Jurong Bird Park closed, and all the birds were relocated to a new home in Mandai. The new park, named Bird Paradise, opened in May 2023 and features eight walk-through aviaries simulating habitats from around the world. This allows visitors to have interactive encounters with birds.
