A person who escapes from one country or region to another country or region by boat.

  • 英语 “boat people” 的意译。
  • 在新加坡华语中，船民特指因天灾或人祸而被迫乘船离开户籍国的人。
  • 船民必须经过甄别，才可确立难民的身份。
  • 用来认证难民的法律文件主要为联合国《关于难民地位的公约》（Convention relating to the Status of Refugees）和《难民议定书》（Refugees protocol）。
ETYMOLOGY
  • ŸThe Mandarin term “船民” is a paraphrase of the English term “boat people”.
  • ŸIn Singaporean Mandarin, “boat people” refers specifically to people who have been forced to leave their countries of residence by boat due to natural or man-made disasters.
  • ŸBoat people must be screened before they can be officially identified as refugees. 
  • The main legal documents for certifying refugee status is the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and Refugees Protocol of the United Nations.
