DEFINITION

Verb

A fundraising activity carried out in public places. A donor will usually receive a sticker from the flag selling organisation.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The “flag” refers to a sticker printed with the logo of the fundraising organisation, which donors receive after they make a donation.
  • Another belief is that the term “flag” stems from the small triangular flag that people doing fundraising activities carry around in the past.
  • Thus, fundraising day is also known as flag day.
  • Between 2020 and 2021, due to the impact of COVID-19, many charities switched to conducting flag selling activities through online livestreaming.
