DEFINITION

Noun

A nationwide electronic money transfer service introduced by the Singapore Government, which can be used to pay bills.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin name “财路” is the transliteration of “GIRO”.
  • GIRO was set up in Singapore in 1984. It is a mechanism for transferring funds between billing organisations, customers and banks. It was launched in conjunction with the National Campaign to Minimise Cash Transactions on 14 March 1985. The three-month campaign served three purposes: encourage Singaporeans to receive their salaries from their employers via direct transfer to their bank accounts; encourage Singaporeans to pay their bills through GIRO; and promote the use of Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale.
