释义

名词

新加坡马来文化区,曾经是马来皇室的住所。

DEFINITION

Noun

Singapore's Malay cultural district and the historic home of past Malay royalty.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The name Kampong Glam” is derived from the Malay words kampong (village) and Gelam (the Glam tree). As the Glam tree grown in abundance at the area, residents often used it to make products and construct ships.
  •  The Malay royal family lived here long before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in Singapore in 1819.
  • In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles signed a treaty with Temenggong Abdul Rahman and Sultan Hussein, which allowed the British East India Company to set up a trading post in Singapore. Subsequently, Sultan Hussein moved to Kampong Glam with his family and entourage.
  • In 1920, due to the increasing number of immigrants and commercial activity, the wealthier Arabs in Kampong Glam began to move out to other areas. Subsequently, the Malays also moved out of Kampong Glam.
  • In 1989, Kampong Glam was gazetted as a conservation area.
