• The Mandarin term “市长” is a paraphrase of the English term “mayor”.
• The term “mayor” was originally translated as “市长” and later as “镇长”. However, from 3 February 1997, the official Chinese translation used by the Singapore media is “市长”.
• On 11 November 2001, then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong merged the nine Community Development Councils (CDCs) into five by locality, and appointed a mayor in each location to manage the North
  East, South East, North West, South West, and Central districts respectively.
• The mayors also serve as the Chairmen of their respective CDCs.
• Mayors lead their CDCs in organising community resources, strengthening partnership networks, and acting as liaisons between various communities.
• After consolidating the common needs of the five CDCs, the mayors submit their recommendations to the Government. These recommendations are mainly aimed at improving people’s lives, such as by providing family and employment assistance.

Unknown to many, in addition to serving local communities, mayors also represent Singapore on the international stage to interact and share experiences with mayors from other nations. (Lianhe Zaobao, 23/9/2020)
