  • 英语 “mayor” 的意译。
  • “Mayor” 一词最初译为 “市长”，之后改译为 “镇长”。然而，自 1997 年 2 月 3 日起，新加坡媒体正式统一使用 “市长” 这个译名。
  • 2001 年 11 月 11 日，时任总理的吴作栋将九个社区发展理事会（简称社理会）按地区合并为五个，并在各地区委任一名市长，分别管理东北、东南、西北、西南，以及中区。
  • 每个社区的市长也在他们各自的地区兼任社理会主席一职。
  • 市长需要领导社理会聚集和整理社区资源、加强伙伴网络，以及担任各社群之间的联系人等。
  • 在综合了五个社理会的共同需求后，市长们会提交一些建议到中央政府。这些建议主要是为了改善人民生活，例如提供家庭与就业援助等。
  • 除了服务本地社群，市长也需代表新加坡与其他国家（特别是亚细安国家）的市长进行交流。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “市长” is a paraphrase of the English term “Mayor”.
  • The term “mayor” was originally translated as “市长” and later as “镇长”. However, from 3 February 1997 onwards, the official Chinese translation used by the Singapore media is “市长”.
  • On 11 November 2001, then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong merged the nine Community Development Councils (CDCs) into five by locality, and appointed a mayor in each location to manage the North East, South East, North West, South West, and Central districts respectively.
  • The mayors also serve as the Chairmen of their respective CDCs.
  • The mayors must lead in gathering and organising community resources, strengthen partnership networks, and act as liaison among the various communities.
  • After consolidating the common needs of the five CDCs, the mayors will submit recommendations to the central government. These recommendations are mainly aimed to improve people’s lives, such as providing family and employment assistance.
  • In addition to serving the local communities, the mayors must also represent Singapore in interacting with mayors from other (especially ASEAN) nations.
