Noun

A famous shopping district and tourist attraction in central Singapore, bounded by Newton to the northeast, Tanglin to the west, and River Valley to the south.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin name “乌节路” is a combination of the transliteration and paraphrase of the English name “Orchard Road”. “乌节” is the Hokkien transliteration of “Orchard”.
  • In the 19th century, the Orchard Road area was home to orchards and plantations that grew tropical fruits, gambier, pepper and nutmeg, hence its name.
  • The Orchard Road area has almost 200 years of history. Apart from plantations, there were also places of worship, schools, houses, and cemeteries.
  • In the 19th century, four communities – the Jews, Muslims, Teochews, and Bencoolen Malays – had cemeteries here. The Teochew cemetery Tai Shan Ting encompassed the present site of Ngee Ann City; it was one of the earliest burial grounds for the local Teochew community. In the 1950s, more than 20,000 graves in the area were exhumed due to land acquisition by the Government.
  • Orchard Road today is a major shopping street and tourist attraction. In 2012, the French marketing research group Presence ranked it the top shopping street in the world.
