ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “大巴窑” is a transliteration of the English term “Toa Payoh”.
  • “Toa Payoh” is an amalgamation of the Hokkien (Minnan) term “toa” meaning “big”, and the Malay term payoh meaning “swamp”. Hence, “Toa Payoh” refers to “big swamp”. In the 19th century, Toa Payoh comprised of large areas of swampland.
  • Before 1962, Toa Payoh was a well-known large-scale slum in Singapore, with more than 3,000 families living in dilapidated houses. The residents living around Braddell Road were mostly farmers.
  • In 1962, to develop Toa Payoh New Town, the Singapore government encouraged residents in Toa Payoh to relocate and provided them with compensation and rewards.
  • From 1965, Toa Payoh was developed into Singapore's first town by the Housing & Development Board's five-year building programme from 1966 to 1970. It was officially completed in 1970.
  • The new town covered an area of 4.63 square kilometres, and provided 35,000 housing units for 200,000 Singaporeans.
