ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “团结预算案” is a paraphrase of the English term “Unity Budget”.
  • On 18 February 2020, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat introduced this Budget as part of the 2020 Budget.
  • The $106 billion Unity Budget aimed to assist Singaporeans of different social backgrounds and businesses to navigate through difficult times through a series of financial assistance measures.
  • This Budget covered six areas: Cushioning the Impact of COVID-19, Supporting Families, Supporting Workers, Supporting Seniors, Transforming Our Economy, and Tackling Climate Change.
  • This Budget included two packages totalling $5.6 billion: the $4 billion Stabilisation and Support Package to support businesses and safeguard jobs, and the $1.6 billion Care and Support Package to ease the burden of Singaporeans.
  • The government also introduced the $6 billion Assurance Package for GST to help Singaporeans cope with the future increase in GST. Each adult Singaporean would receive cash grants of $700 to $1,600 over five years.
