释义

名词

地面湿滑且没有冷气设备的市场。

DEFINITION

Noun

A market with a wet floor surface and without air-conditioning.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The character 湿” in “湿巴刹refers to the wet and slippery floor surface. The Mandarin term “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay term pasar, which means market.
  • Wet markets are generally located in public housing estates, where  residents can conveniently purchase daily necessities as well as raw and cooked food.
  • In addition to selling fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and tofu, wet markets also sell cooked food products. Thus, wet markets have wet and slippery floor surfaces and no air-conditioning.
  • As wet markets offer a wide variety of fresh and affordable food items, most of these items will already be sold out around noon.
