  • “黄埔” 的名称源自于新加坡早期的侨领及商人胡亚基(1816-1880)。胡亚基出生于广东省黄埔区,早年随父亲南来经商,之后创办了 “黄埔公司”,而人们也因此称他为 “黄埔先生”。
  • 除了经商及慈善事迹为后世所称道,胡亚基的园林——南生花园(也称南生园)更是新加坡早期的历史名园之一。
  • 如今,黄埔的地理范围也包含了南生花园的旧址。建于约 1840 年的南生花园占地70英亩,十分宽广,原址位于实龙岗路及文庆路一带,正门设于如今明地迷亚路大牌 32 与 33 座组屋之间。胡亚基逝世后,南生花园由佘连城买下,改称之为明丽园。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The name Whampoa originated from Hoo Ah Kay (1816-1880), an overseas Chinese leader and businessman in Singapore. He was born in the Huangpu District in Guangdong Province of China. He came to Southeast Asia with his father for business when he was young and later founded Whampoa & Co. As a result, the people referred to him as 黄埔先生”, which are made up of the words “黄埔” (Whampoa) and “先生” (Sir/Mister).
  • In addition to being remembered for his business achievements and philanthropic deeds, Hoo Ah Kay’s Whampoa Gardens or 南生花园” (also known as “南生园”) was one of the early historic gardens in Singapore.
  • Today, the Whampoa area includes the original site of Whampoa Gardens. Built around 1840, the large and spacious garden was 70 acres and located in the area of Serangoon Road and Boon Keng Road, with its main entrance formerly located between the present Blocks 32 and 33 along Bendemeer Road. After the death of Hoo Ah Kay, Whampoa Gardens was bought by Seah Liang Seah, who renamed it Bendemeer House or “明丽园.
