  • 新加坡开埠后,有许多不同的华文名称,包括 “星加坡”、“星岛” 等。
  • 有说法认为,“星洲”一词最早出自邱菽园,而他就自号为“星洲寓公”。 
  • 1898 年,邱菽园为了行文方便,就在他与林文庆等人创办的《天南新报》上将新加坡简称为 “星洲”。从此,“星洲” 成为新加坡的别称之一。
  • “星洲” 一词富有诗意,“星” 取自新加坡英语名称 “Singapore” 的第一音节,而 “洲” 一词点出了新加坡这个岛国的地理样貌。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Since the founding years of Singapore, it has had many different Mandarin names, such as 星加坡 and .
  •  It is believed that the term “” was first coined by Khoo Seok Wan from his alias “洲寓公” (meaning “rich person living abroad in Sin Chew”).
  • In 1898, Khoo Seok Wan referred to Singapore as “” out of convenience in his writing in Thien Nan Shin Pao, which was founded by him, Lim Boon Keng, and others. Since then, “” became one of the alternative names of Singapore.
  • The term “” is poetic. “” is taken from the first syllable of “Singapore”, while “” refers to Singapore’s geography as an island nation.

RELATED INFORMATION

In the early days, the term “星洲” was widely used in the newspaper industry. For example, Aw Boon Haw used “星洲” for the name of the daily newspaper he founded on 15 January 1929. Till today, Sin Chew Daily (《星洲日报》)still exists in Malaysia. In 1983, Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew Jit Poh merged to form Lianhe Zaobao in Singapore.
