Noun
A constituency in which an individual candidate runs for Member of Parliament (MP).
In a SMC, each political party may only field one single candidate to run for Parliament. SMCs are also known as single-MP constituencies.
According to Section 8A(1A) of the Parliamentary Elections Act (Cap. 218), there must be at least eight SMCs in the country at any given time.
In addition to SMCs, Singapore also has Group Representation Constituencies (GRC), in which more than one candidate runs for Parliament.
In 1991, Singapore had a total of 21 SMCs.
The total number of SMCs were reduced to nine in 1996.
In 2020, the total number of SMCs in the country has increased to a total of 14.
The number of SMCs in the last general election was greater than those in previous years, which seemed to allow more choices for Singaporeans when voting for individual Members of Parliament. (Lianhe Zaobao, 21/10/2019)
