• The term “制水” originated from a Cantonese paraphrase of the English term “water rationing”.
  
• In the 1960s, Singapore experienced extremely dry weather while its population continued to increase, leading to a rapid rise in water consumption.
  
• The Government implemented water rationing exercises between 23 April 1963 and 28 February 1964.
  
• In 1995, during the nationwide Save Water Campaign, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) held a water rationing exercise over six days, to promote awareness of Singapore’s water shortage, and remind Singaporeans of the importance of saving water.

The six-day water rationing exercise held under the Save Water Campaign has come to an end. As to how effective it was, the Public Utilities Board has yet to release official details. (Lianhe Zaobao, 29/7/1995)

限水 (Mainland China)

• Since 2016, the PUB has collaborated with schools every year in March to organise water rationing activities on World Water Day. It has also collaborated with the Ministry of Education to include content about water conservation awareness (such as “Make Every Drop Count”) in the school syllabus.
  
• In 2019, about 47,000 students participated in activities related to water rationing, the highest number to date.
