DEFINITION

Noun

Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats in Singapore with an area larger than a 5-room flat. Also known in Mandarin as “六房式组屋” or “公寓式”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • Since its establishment in 1960, HDB has been responsible for building affordable and good-quality public housing.
  • HDB flats are categorised according to the number of rooms in the flat, with the living room counting as one room.
  • As HDB stopped building Executive flats in 1995, such units can now only be bought on the open market.
  • According to the Census of Population in 2020, 22.9% of Singaporeans live in 5-room flats and Executive flats.
  • The floor area of an Executive flat is typically about 140 square metres. Like 5-room flats, Executive flats have three bedrooms, an additional space that can be converted to a study room, a living room, kitchen, and two bathrooms, but they have a larger total area. Some also come with balconies.
SAMPLE SENTENCE
Following our report in April, where a man claimed that a 6-room flat at Jurong West Street 81 was illegally rented out to more than 20 people, some of whom held gambling sessions and created a mess in the unit, there was another claim that a 4-room flat in Block 842 in the same area had exceeded the occupancy cap for tenants.
