Singaporean Mandarin Database
This database contains a collection of Mandarin terms which have cultural, historical or sentimental value unique to Singapore. These terms may be used by Singaporeans in the past or at present. Some of the terms are read in print while others are used in our everyday conversations.
A type of shorts which is knee-length and usually narrow at the leg opening. The term is the transliteration and paraphrase of the English term “bermuda shorts”.
- This type of knee-length shorts was popular in the early twentieth century. At that time when British officials were sent to tropical countries, they cut their khaki pants short. Some British staff stationed in Bermuda also asked the local tailors to shorten their trousers.
- The tailors in Bermuda sold these shorts to the locals and it quickly became a symbol of the island, hence they were named “bermuda shorts”.
The trial of a case where a son is charged with manslaughter of his father in West Coast continues this morning, with the police investigator revealing in Court that traces of blood of the father were found on the defendant’s Polo shirt and bermuda shorts.（Lianhe Wanbao，10/10/2016）
