由来
  • 国泰戏院(Cathay Cineplex,前称为“Cathay Cinema”)于1939 年10月3日开幕,首部上映的电影是亚历山大科达爵士(Sir Alexander Korda)的《四根羽毛》(The Four Feathers)。
  • 国泰戏院属于国泰大厦(Cathay Building)的一部分,也是大厦第一处开放的部分。早期的国泰戏院设有1,300个座位,也是新加坡第一个设有冷气的公共场所。
  • 国泰戏院原是国泰机构属下的戏院。国泰机构是个电影制作与发行企业,由陆运涛创办。
  • 2000年,因国泰大厦进行重建,国泰戏院暂时关闭,直到2006年三月才重新开张。
  • 2017年11月24日,mm2 全亚影视娱乐公司收购了国泰机构的影院业务,当中有包括国泰戏院在内的八家国泰影城(Cathay Cineplexes)旗下的电影院。
  • 2022年6月27日,因为客流量的原因,国泰戏院结束了运营。
ETYMOLOGY
  • The Cathay Cineplex was originally known as Cathay Cinema. It opened on 3 October 1939, and the first movie screened was Sir Alexander Korda’s The Four Feathers.
  • The cinema was housed in Cathay Building and was the first part of the building to be opened. It had 1,300 seats and was the first airconditioned public space in Singapore.
  • The cinema was operated by the Cathay Organisation, a movie production and distribution business founded by Loke Wan Tho.
  • In 2000, the cinema closed as Cathay Building underwent reconstruction. In March 2006, the Cathay Cineplex reopened.
  • On 24 November 2017, mm2 Asia Ltd acquired Cathay Organisation’s cinema business, including eight cinemas under Cathay Cineplexes, encompassing the Cathay Cineplex.
  • On 27 June 2022, Cathay Cineplex ceased operations due to low attendance.
