Changi is located in the eastern part of Singapore, bounded by the sea on its north, south, and east, and by Pasir Ris and Tampines to the west.

ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “樟宜” is the transliteration of the English word “Changi”.
  • In 1828, the name “Changi” had already appeared in the Plan of the Town of Singapore published that year. The name “Changi” was also written as “Changhi” or “Changei”.
  • It is believed that there are several possible origins of the name “Changi”. One came from Henry Ridley, who believed that “Changi” was derived from the Chengal tree (also known as Chengai). The scientific name of the Chengal tree is Neobalanocarpus heimii, which is also known as Balanscorpus heimii or Balano scorpas. Another belief is that the name might be derived from the climbing shrubs, Apama corymbosa or Changi Ular, which grew in that area.
  • There are more than twenty places in Singapore with the term “Changi” in their names.
