释义

名词

原位于美芝路(Beach Road)的克莱德台市场(Clyde Terrace Market)的俗称。也称克莱台巴刹、美芝路巴刹。

DEFINITION

Noun

The colloquial name of Clyde Terrace Market, which was originally located at Beach Road. Also known in Mandarin as 克莱台巴刹” or 美芝路巴刹”.

ETYMOLOGY
  • It is believed that Clyde Terrace Market was named after Colin Campbell, First Baron Clyde, who was Field Marshall in the 1857 Indian Mutiny.
  • The Mandarin term “巴刹” is the transliteration of the Malay word pasar, which refers to markets.
  • As the building in front of Clyde Terrace Market was made of steel, local residents referred to the market by this feature.
Clyde Terrace Market commenced operation in 1874 and eventually evolved into a wholesale centre for fresh produce. Many small-scale vendors usually purchased their goods here and sold them at remote villages or small markets.
  • From 1977 to 1983, various parts of Clyde Terrace Market were progressively demolished to make way for East Coast Parkway and other urban development projects. The vendors were relocated to Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre.
  • Currently, The Gateway, established in 1990, is built on a section of the old grounds which Clyde Terrace Market once stood.
