ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “上诉庭” is a paraphrase of the English term “Court of Appeal”.
  • The Court of Appeal is an appellate court and only hears appeals from the High Court. If the plaintiff or the defendant is dissatisfied with the High Courts judgment, either party may appeal to the Court of Appeal to request that the original judgment be overturned. The Court of Appeal is the highest court in Singapore and the court of final appeal.
  • The Court of Appeal usually comprises three judges, including the Chief Justice, the vice-presidents of the Court, and the Judges of Appeal.
