由来
- 随着新加坡经济的迅速转变,不同领域对人力都有大量的需求,加上许多女性在婚后仍选择工作,也意味着对家庭女佣的需求有所增加。
- 1960年代,新加坡开始聘请来自邻国马来西亚和印度尼西亚的家庭女佣。
- 1978年,新加坡政府实施了外籍女佣计划(Foreign Maids Scheme),其中一个重要的目的是鼓励新加坡女性继续工作。
- 与此同时,菲律宾政府也在1970年代鼓励菲律宾人到国外求职。这些在外地工作的菲律宾人,尤其是女性移民,被视为正面的榜样,因为她们愿意为推动国家经济而作出贡献。到了1970年代末,有不少菲律宾妇女在新加坡当家庭女佣。 由于新加坡对菲佣和其他女佣的需求不断增加,政府也陆续采取了各种管制女佣人口数目的措施。
ETYMOLOGY
- Following Singapore’s rapid economic development, a huge demand for manpower emerged in all sectors. As more women choose to remain in the workforce after marriage, there was an increase in demand for domestic help.
- In the 1960s, this demand was initially met by workers from neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
- In 1978, the Singapore Government implemented the Foreign Maids Scheme. One important objective was to encourage Singaporean women to remain in the workforce.
- Meanwhile, during the 1970s, the Philippine government was encouraging Filipinos to seek employment outside the country. These workers were hailed as role models because they were willing make
personal sacrifices for the sake of their country’s economy. By the end of the 1970s, many Filipino women were working in Singapore as domestic helpers.
- As Singapore’s demand for domestic helpers continues to rise, the Government has put forth measures to restrict the number of domestic helpers in the country.
