ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “骇客” is the transliteration of the English word “hacker”.
  • The original meaning of “hack” is “to slash”. The word was later used in the technology industry as a metaphor for intruding into computer systems.
  • The term “life hack” originated in 2004 from a talk by Danny O'Brien, a technology journalist from the United States. The term was later introduced to Singapore via the Internet.
  • In 2020, the Lien Foundation introduced the concept of “life hack” for dementia care in a social project. To avoid confusion with computer hackers, the local Chinese media translated it using the less common term “骇客” (hacker).
