ETYMOLOGY
  • The Mandarin term “骇客” is the transliteration of the English term “hacker”.
  • The original meaning of “hack” is “to slash”. The word was later used in the technology industry as a metaphor for breaking into computer systems.
  • The term “life hack” originated in a 2004 talk given by Danny O’Brien, an American technology journalist. It quickly caught on around the world.
  • In 2020, the Lien Foundation introduced the concept of “life hacks” for dementia care. To avoid confusion with computer hackers (“黑客”), the local Chinese media translated the term using the less common “骇客”.
