由来
  • 在 1969 年以前，新加坡所提供的大学先修（Pre-University）课程一般在中学学府选读。
  • 1969 年，新加坡第一所大学先修学院成立，在本地称为初级学院（Junior College）。这所学院就是国家初级学院。第二年的初级学院学生，必须参加新加坡剑桥 A' 水准会考（Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examination）。
  • 2004 年，教育部推出直通车课程（Integrated Programme），修读该课程的学生无需参加 'O' 水准会考也可升上学校的高中部或另一所参与该课程的初级学院。
  • 由于学生人数的缩减，到了 2019 年有几所初级学院合并，从原本的 23 所减至 19 所。
ETYMOLOGY
  • Prior to 1969, Pre-University courses were offered as part of the curriculum for Singapore secondary schools.
  • In 1969, the first Pre-University school was established in Singapore, and was known as National Junior College. Junior college students in their second year have to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations.
  • In 2004, the Ministry of Education introduced the Integrated Programme, where students in the programme could advance into subsequent years of studies in the same secondary school that has a high school section, or a junior college that participates in the programme, allowing them to skip the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level Examinations.
  • Due to declining enrolment, several junior colleges were merged in 2019, reducing the total number of junior colleges from 23 to 19.
